Notepad getting huge improvements on windows 10 version 1809 (Zoom in/out, wrap-around, Bing search)
Notepad is the oldest text editor of Windows which was included in all the versions since Windows 1.0 in 1985. As it has not been updated for very long, But now with Windows 10 October 2018 Update version 1809, Microsoft adds some significant features to it. One of the interesting changes is Microsoft Added the Notepad Text Zoom in and Out option with several other features such as Improved find and replace with the word-wrap tool, line numbers, and much more.
Zoom in and Out Text in Notepad on Windows 10
Starting with Windows 10 October 2018 Update, Microsoft added options to make it quick and easy to zoom text in Notepad.
To change Text Zoom Level in Notepad in Windows 10 Open Notepad. Click View on the menu bar when Notepad appears on the screen. Hover the cursor over Zoom and select Zoom in or Zoom out until you get the preferred zoom level.
When you change the text layout, you can notice the zoom percentage on its status bar.
Alternatively, you can use your mouse or keyboard shortcuts to zoom in on the windows 10 notepad. Simply Keep a hold on “Ctrl” key and roll the scroll wheel of the mouse towards up (zoom in) and down (zoom out) the text until you see the desired level.
Also, you can use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl + Plus, Ctrl + Minus to zoom in and out and use Ctrl + 0 to restore the zoom level to the default.
While Notepad is open, use the below hotkeys combination to change the zoom level.
|Ctrl + Plus||To zoom in the text|
|Ctrl + Minus||To zoom out the text|
|Ctrl + 0||This will restore the zoom level to default which is 100%.|
Wrap-around find and replace and search autofill
In addition to this, Notepad also includes a feature to wrap-around find/replace. The current notepad only allows you to search for strings in Notepad in one direction from the location of the cursor. That means your search for a string from the cursor to the end of the file or from the cursor to the beginning of the file. This can be very frustrating as sometimes you just want to search an entire file for the presence of a string.
With Windows 10 October 2018 Update Microsoft Added the option “wrap-around” for the function “Find / Replace”. Notepad will store previously entered values and checkboxes and automatically apply them when you reopen the Find dialog box. In addition, when you select text and open the “Find” dialog box, the selected word or a fragment of the text will be automatically placed in the query field
Display line and column numbers
Also, Microsoft state that the new version of Notepad will finally display line and column numbers when word-wrap is enabled. ( Previously also the status bar displays information including line and column numbers but only if Word Wrap is disabled, But now with Windows 10 version 1809 Notepad will display line and column numbers even word-warp is enabled.) And you can use Ctrl + Backspace to delete the previous word, and arrow keys to unselect text first and then move the cursor.
Other minor improvements coming on the upcoming Windows 10 feature upgrade Verison 1809:
- Improved performance when opening large files in Notepad.
- The combination Ctrl + Backspace allows you to delete the previous word.
- The arrow keys now first cancel the selection of the text, and then move the cursor.
- When you save a file in Notepad, the row and column are no longer reset to 1.
- Notepad now correctly displays the lines that do not fit completely on the screen.
Also, Microsoft added a couple of more exciting features in Notepad. Microsoft integrating the Bing search feature in Notepad. In order to invoke search all you have to do is select the word or phrase and press Ctrl + B, or right-click on the selected text and hit “Search with Bing” or go to Edit > Search with Bing.
