Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device this device is currently in use

Getting Error Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device “Device this device is currently in use” While trying to safely remove the USB device. For some other users the error would be like the “Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device” error:

• This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device and then try again.
• Windows can’t stop your ‘Generic volume’ device because it is in use. Close any program or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later.
• The device ‘Generic volume’ cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later.

Basically, this error means the USB device you are attempting to eject is currently being used. And To protect your data and your device, the system stops the ejection and shows you the “Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device” error.

How To Safely Remove USB (When getting this device is currently in use error)

Here are some quick solutions to fix this issue Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device.

First Check carefully the taskbar buttons on the taskbar. See if there are any portable programs on your storage device that are running or any files that are opened. Better Save and close all open tasks, Then try to safely remove the USB drive.

Open Control panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Devices and Printers -> and found the particular device of interest, in my case a USB Thumb Drive. Right-click on it and Select Troubleshoot from the resulting Drop Down Menu.

Wait A few seconds, This will check and fix if any error causing the Device to remove safely. After completing the troubleshooting, you may get a screen the problem had been fixed. And it was,  Now try to safely remove the device.

Download the free Process Explorer, and Run the program. Once it’s running, click File > Show Details for All Processes. Click Find > Find handle or DLL…

Type the letter for your USB flash drive (e.g. type G: if “G” is your USB drive letter)

Click Search. Look at the results and note the processes. They will tell you what’s currently using the drive, so you can terminate it/them.

Still having the problem ejecting the device, Simply shut down your PC and remove the Drive. Then check the USB device with another PC to make sure there is not any fault in the device itself.
