There are three types of Windows license key, OEM, Retail, and Volume. If your license is retail or volume, or if you upgraded from a retail copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or 8.1, the Windows 10 license carries the retail rights from which it was derived – can be transferred. But under Microsoft’s rules, you are only entitled to a one time transfer.

However, OEM copy is designed to be locked to the hardware they were originally installed on. Microsoft doesn’t want you to be able to move those OEM copies of Windows to another computer. If you have to move an OEM license to another computer, you can call the support staff of Micrrrooosoft to activate the license for you.

If you have a full retail copy of Windows 10, you can transfer it as many times as you want.

When transferring a product key to a new device, bear in mind that you can only activate the same edition of Windows 10. For instance, if you uninstall a Windows 10 Home product key, you can only activate another computer running the Home edition.
